ABOUT THE TUTOR
Let me introduce myself as your tutor. I am a professional artist and qualified teacher working in mixed media and specialising in the medium of pastel.
As a landscape painter, predominantly, I find pastels a most rewarding medium to use. It enables me to employ the energy of marks used in a pencil or charcoal drawing combined with a range of subtle to vibrant colours possible in oil paint, plus the representation of textures achievable in printmaking. I also mix mediums into my work as a response to the fabric of the landscape. Using printed collage on paper with watercolour, acrylic and ink allows me to build up layers with unexpected consequences, that gives a three dimensional quality.
I am a member of my local Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers promoting the skills of these crafts. I have a selection of looms in my studio where I can create large abstract wall-hangings or smaller wearable items from hand spun and hand dyed wools, often using natural dyes.
After leaving school, I spent five years travelling the globe and working in America and Australia. My travels took me to the remote parts of Mexico, Nepal, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and to European countries, painting and drawing.
Returning in 1990 as a mature student, I studied at my local college in Somerset for a one year Diploma in Fine Art Foundation Studies, and then on to the Bristol Polytechnic for a BA Degree Course. The course for Fine Art split into three areas of painting, printmaking and sculpture.
I have always had an affinity with the landscape, whether in the amazingly diverse terrain of the British Isles, or to places on the European continent and further afield. However contrasting these locations, the effects of light are paramount for my inspiration.
It gives me enormous pleasure, as a teacher, to guide my students into the ways of ‘looking’ at what is around us; instructing and nurturing those, often dormant, talents to create a representation of what you see in front of you.
I exhibit locally and am on the committee for the Peterborough Artists’ Open Studios Group. I also teach classes at the local Adult Education College.
